Navigating the transition from care to independence is a journey that presents unique challenges and opportunities, especially for young people embarking on higher education. Care leavers, individuals who have spent time in the foster care system or other forms of out-of-home care, often face obstacles that can impact their educational journey. These challenges range from financial instability and lack of familial support, to emotional and mental health struggles.
Through the Sussex Fund and support from the Rudd Family Foundation, Sussex offers a comprehensive support system for care leaver students to help them thrive both academically and personally. This includes cash awards, gym membership, a transition gift to see students through the summer holidays, as well as a graduation package that covers gown and hood hire, a guest ticket and photography, which ensures that they can celebrate their academic achievements with their peers.
Jake Ryan is a foundation year and care-experienced student at Sussex. He talks about the support that he has received and the difference it has made to him:
“I got a great welcome box when I arrived at Sussex, which included lots of things like pens and notebooks. It also contained a weighted blanket to help combat anxiety and aid sleep, which I love.
“Overall, the package of support I’ve received has been a blessing. Being given gym membership is probably even more of a blessing. Besides the physical benefits, it's very good for my mental health. What is more, I haven’t had to stress about finding the money to pay for it.
“In addition, thanks to the financial help that I’ve received, I am in a position to do a decent food shop when I need to. I do have to budget, but it’s less of a worry for me than for some other students. Eating well is so important when you’re studying hard and training at the gym.
“Thank you to all those who have given to the Sussex Fund, as well as to the Rudd Family Foundation. You have made a huge difference to my university experience so far and are helping me to succeed in my academic journey.”
The university journey of a care leaver is not just about overcoming obstacles; it's also about harnessing resilience, building a community of support, and paving the way for a brighter future. At Sussex, we believe that background should never be a barrier to education or success.
