Brighton & Hove is facing a higher than usual outbreak of the disease in recent years, and if not brought under control this could mean the city losing a large proportion of its 17,000 elms.
As part of our routine monitoring of tree health on Falmer campus two trees were identified as infected with Dutch elm disease, and as per Brighton & Hove City Council containment procedure, were scheduled for felling to protect the other rare elm trees we have on campus.
These trees were located outside the Meeting House and behind the Sport Centre, and the council is conducting the work this week.
