Module Outline

This module introduces you to feminist thinking and methods within computational histories, and creative coding practice. No prerequisites skills required.

You will gain a broader understanding of the historical, cultural and societal processes which underpin contemporary issues related to computational bias (e.g. race, gender, sexuality,class). Coding is part of our everyday experience, yet many do not have access to it –deepening bias in who can shape or intervene in future societies.

You will identify feminist approaches to critique existing computational practice and representation, whilst working with a dataset of your choice and creative coding to create a digital artifact.

Module learning outcomes

Evaluate debates and approaches to techno-feminism

Develop and evaluate practice and research skills in computational practice (e.g. coding, hacking)

Produce self-directed praxis work with reference to a range of scholarly sources and conceptual frameworks.

Demonstrate a critical awareness of the theoretical implications of computational practice in various cultural contexts.

Collaborate productively in the planning and execution of practice work.
