Nationalism and Global Order

Module 023IRS

Module details for 2023/24.

30 credits

FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)

Module Outline

This module provides an international perspective on the origins, evolution and the possible futures of nationalism and the nation-state. Despite many predictions to the contrary, we have witnessed a resurgence of nationalism and the recentring of the nation-state in the world politics over the recent decades. These dynamics can be seen in, for instance, the formation of new nation-states, interstate territorial conflicts in Europe, the Caucuses and West Asia, Brexit, ‘minority’ nationalisms, and national management of global health emergencies. This module offers an internationally sensitive, theoretically informed, and empirically grounded approach to the rise and evolution of nationalism and the nation form and explores the possibility of a post-national(ist) world order.
