Module Outline
The module is divided into two halves. The first half consists of core topics providing a theoretical framework for the study of women's human rights. It draws on feminist legal theory, human rights theory, anthropological and historical materials and international and national rights instruments and documentation. The second half of the module consists of topics. Each of these will focus on the conception, implementation, adherence and breach of a specific right or related rights. The specific topics will be selected each year by the course convenor from a range of possible topics. Selection will be dependent on the expertise of the particular lecturers taking the module, the availability of guest speakers, the nature of world and local events in relation to women's rights.
Module learning outcomes
Articulate an understanding of the historical origins of the rights of women and the theoretical debates surrounding the contemporary use of human rights for women.
Synthesize theoretical perspectives on women's human rights and apply to a specific area of self-initiated research.
Demonstrate a general ability to analyse human rights from a gender perspective and to appreciate the implications of that analysis for the implementation of specific rights in relation to women
Appraise the different legal and political approaches to the implementation of women's rights
