Module Outline
This module provides students with the opportunity to complete under expert supervision an
independent extended piece of research and writing on a topic of their choosing relevant to the
[MA/MSc] programme themes. The dissertation will be 10,000 words in length and may involve either
desk-based research based on secondary data sources or original empirical study involving primary
data collection.
In preparation for their dissertation, as part of the separate research skills module, students will
receive training in research methods, dissertation planning and writing and prepare a research
outline. Each student is also allocated a dissertation supervisor, who will help them prepare for their
research, develop their problematic and supervise their independent research and writing through
four one-on-one supervisions.
Module learning outcomes
Identify and develop a research question relevant to the field of the
programme of study
Demonstrate the ability to plan and execute a sustained programme of
original research
Apply the practical research skills necessary for the thorough exploration
of their chosen topic, making use of appropriate primary and/or
secondary sources and data collection methods
Demonstrate in-depth understanding of and critical engagement with
major themes, concepts and debates related to the topic chosen.
Produce a well-structured and comprehensively argued piece of written
work meeting standard requirements of academic writing and
referencing.
