Module Outline
This module is a post-beginner stage for students with basic prior knowledge of the target language (TL). Building on existing levels of proficiency at A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference [CEFR] the module aims to provide the opportunity for students to:
- develop practical applied competence in the four TL skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing;
- consolidate and develop a range of standard lexical, phonetic, and grammatical principles to allow rapid progression in the TL;
- encourage autonomous use of the TL;
- develop contextualised cultural knowledge and awareness through study of authentic TL materials in a range of media (text-based, digital and audio-visual).
This module is at B1 – B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Equivalent Signature Level 320; elements of 321; 322 part B.
Module learning outcomes
Recognise and identify the main points of clear extended discourse delivered at normal speed (in BSL) on a selected range of topics.
Communicate effectively in BSL, with some fluency, within a range of common formal/informal/work-related contexts.
Use and apply of a good range of vocabulary and grammatical forms, and some complex BSL language structures, appropriate to linguistic conventions in sign language.
Display a critical understanding of aspects of common social, cultural, and/or work-related matters relating to the Deaf community; and can demonstrate an appropriate response in selected work-related and social settings and contexts.
