Module Outline
This course builds on the Ideas in Development and Climate Change in the autumn term. The course explores approaches and tools underpinning the concept of climate resilient development, as well as its applications in policy and practice.
Lectures will balance theoretical debates with practical case study examples from development policy and practice, and is taught by faculty members from the Institute of Development Studies and the Department of Geography. Topics covered in the course include:
Downscaling global climate data and dealing with uncertainty
Impact modelling and sectoral planning approaches
Seasonal forecasts and early warning
Conceptual insights: vulnerability, risk, uncertainty and resilience
National and international policy contexts
Community based adaptation (CBA) and national adaptation planning
Climate change, migration and conflict
Disaster risk reduction (DRR)
Mainstreaming and organisational change
Adaptation delivery instruments
Economics of adaptation and adaptation finance
Low carbon climate resilient development (LCCRD)
Each lecture will be followed up by a seminar in which students work further on the topics, relating development issues to climate change challenges.
Module learning outcomes
Position and articulate their own specific interests within emerging approaches to climate resilient development
Devise and sustain arguments that contribute to debates on central themes linking climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction with development theory and practice
Distinguish different dimensions of climate resilient development, including different conceptual underpinnings and disciplinary and methodological approaches
Critically evaluate climate resilience issues in relation to international institutional systems, structures and actors related to development and analyse, using appropriate frameworks, climate change and development policies and policy processes
Understand and use the variety of approaches, methods and tools available to deliver low carbon, climate resilient development
