30 credits

FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)

Module Outline

This module provides an introduction to how migration is managed by national governments and international organisations and how political and legal processes and frameworks shape governments' attempts to manage migration. You will develop an understanding of the theoretical frameworks and models used by researchers to explain migration policymaking, as well as an empirical knowledge of the main patterns and trends in migration policies. A recurring theme of the module is how states exhibit both inclusionary and exclusionary tendencies towards migrants and how these apparent contradictions can be understood. The module will cover, among other topics, the politics of immigration, migration governance by and beyond the state, gender and migration, media and migration, intergroup relations and prejudice, and the ethics of migration.
