Module Outline
This course provides students with an understanding of the science, politics and developmental implications of climate change focusing on the perspectives of the poor in developing countries. The course assesses the overlaps between development and climate change, focusing on climate change adaptation and mitigation approaches and critically analyses options to reduce negative effects and harness opportunities. The course also examines the social, political and economic drivers of vulnerability to climate change, considering how policy processes at different scales influence adaptation and mitigation strategies in developing countries.
Module learning outcomes
Critically engage with the main theories, concepts and debates that arise in how climate change affects prospects for development in low and middle income countries, and to be able to analyse their global historical and contemporary contexts.
Critically assess policy choices and options for integrating the challenges of climate change with development.
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the various inter-relationships in climate change, including adaptation and mitigation, emissions and climate change.
