Environmental Research Skills (BSc Geog)
Module F8512
Module details for 2021/22.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 5
Module Outline
In this module, you'll develop the skills you need to carry out your final-year Geography dissertation and get experience in obtaining primary scientific data using a range of fieldwork, laboratory analytical and ICT methods to help you to address specific research questions. These methods will be placed in a wider research context by embedding them in a series of lectures and workshops about tree populations, carbon sequestration, GIS, environmental microclimate, and soils. This preparation includes an introduction to the scientific method, how best to collect samples, how to use statistics to analyse your data, write a scientific report and critically reflect on error. Some of your field and laboratory work will be based around a single study-site off campus to elucidate the coupling amongst numerous environmental parameters and processes.
Module learning outcomes
Understand a variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods and their relative strengths and weaknesses.
Collect, analyse and interpret primary geographical, ecological and environmental data.
Select the most appropriate methodology for their intended third year dissertation research.
Write clear and concise laboratory reports.
