Political Ecology and Environmental Justice

Module 013IDSANTH

Module details for 2023/24.

30 credits

FHEQ Level 6

Full Module Description

This module introduces the concepts of environmental justice and political
ecology, a broad set of theoretical and methodological approaches to understanding the
relationship between environmental change and social (in)justice. The module encourages
students to approach political ecology as a ‘public-facing’ discipline, engaging with activism
and social movements. This includes the assessments, which are designed around public
communication and creative methods. This will provide you with opportunities to build
employability skills and to engage with real-world environmental justice struggles.
The module is broadly split into three sections:
• In Weeks 1-3, we explore the theoretical insights of political ecology and
environmental justice.
• Weeks 4 and 5 are workshops focused on training in communications techniques and
groupwork on student assessments.
• Weeks 6-9 consist of a series of case studies and guest speakers drawing on current
issues of political ecological concern.
