Why is my email address A.N.Other@sussex.ac.uk and not (for example) Ann.Other@sussex.ac.uk?

Members of staff or postgraduate students are entitled to a friendly email address alongside the email address based on their username, for example A.N.Other@sussex.ac.uk alongside ano23@sussex.ac.uk.

If you are staff or a postgraduate student, when your IT Services account is first created, a friendly email address is automatically generated using your family name and all the initials of your given names, (as recorded in the central staff/student database at the time).

If that particular friendly email address has already been given to another person, then you will be offered an alternative, which could be of the form Ann.Other@sussex.ac.uk (that is, based on your first given name in full, plus your family name).

Note that if you are a graduate returning as staff or postgraduate, your existing Sussex email address will not automatically be changed, and you'll need to request a friendly email address if you want one.   This is explained in FAQ 523.
