A free short film event titled ‘Social Justice Through a Film Lens’, screening at The Dance Space Circus Street Brighton.

This event has been created by members of the Intersecting Stigma Working group at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and will mark World Day of Social Justice, please join us to raise awareness and discuss the importance of challenging inequality and the importance of promoting a more fair and just society for all.

The event will take place on 13 February from 5 - 7:45 pm at The Dance Space, Circus Street Brighton, BN2 9AS ()

Film line up

• Sayeda – Directed by Nesma Zazou, Egypt, 2017.

Sayeda, and her 7-year-old son, Salah, struggle to reach a doctor's appointment at a Giza hospital. Sayeda won the best film award at the national Egyptian film festival 2018. It was screened in the BBC Arabic film festival in London and Cannes short film corner amongst other local and regional festivals.

•  Limbo – Directed by Lotje Sodderland, UK, 2020

A poetic true-fiction short film about a delicate but dynamic assortment of elderly men living alone. Director Lotje Sodderland transitioned from public policy research in London to production roles in Amsterdam, Paris, and London, before co-directing the Emmy-nominated Netflix documentary MY BEAUTIFUL BROKEN BRAIN, following her recovery from a brain haemorrhage. Her 2020 narrative short LIMBO was critically acclaimed by filmmaker Ken Loach.

• Ward’s Henna Party – Directed by Morad mostafa, Egypt, 2020

"Halima", a Sudanese henna painter living in Egypt, goes to one of Giza's local areas to prepare a bride for her wedding. Her 7 years old daughter "Ward" accompanies her and starts to wander around and discover the place.  Morad, an Egyptian Filmmaker, born in Cairo, has worked on several independent films and created multiple shorts all of which have been selected in "Clermont-Ferrand” three consecutive years and have screened in more than 300 festivals worldwide winning several awards. His short film "I PROMISE YOU PARADISE" was selected for Cannes Film Festival "Critics Week" 2023.

•  Au Revoir Balthazar – Directed by Rafael Sommerhalder, Switzerland, 2016

This multi-award winning animated short film created by Rafael Sommerhalder has screened worldwide, and we are privileged to be given the opportunity to show this thought-provoking animation in Brighton. This is not a film to be missed. A scarecrow, a storm, a broken leg. The resonant sound of a seashell. Leaving forever.

Panellists

Dr Khalid Ali, Reader in Geriatrics at BSMS, and co-founder of ‘Medfest Egypt’ (international medical film festival) will chair the event.

The panel includes:

• Dr Fionnuala Finnerty- a consultant in Sexual Health/HIV who works closely with refugee and asylum-seeking groups.
• Dr Patrick Nyikavaranda- co-director at ‘Diversity Resource International’ and academic whose research interest involves migrant populations and mental health.
• Lotje Sodderland- award-wining British filmmaker and director of ‘Limbo’ which is included in our film lineup.
• Manal Ahmed, a Sudanese national who is working with Sudanese refugees in Egypt, Chad and Uganda.

We hope that the event will evoke a lively discussion between the panellists and the audience. There will be a drinks reception after the panel discussion providing an opportunity to discuss the content further.
