Collection Description

The Caffyn Collection is a diachronic collection of Percy Bysshe Shelley-related books which allows Romantic scholars to trace the publishing history of his works through first editions and reprints. There are 28 items in total, including critical and biographical studies, photostats of letters from Shelley and other non-printed material. Works appearing in first editions held at Sussex include ‘Rosalinde and Helen’ (1819), ‘Prometheus Unbound’ (1820) and posthumously published poems. Among the secondary material is C D Locock’s Examination of the Shelley Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library (1903). Non-printed material includes a photographic facsimile of 40 pages of the notebook Shelley took on his last voyage and 20 numbered photostats of his letters with a typed transcript of each.
