Review Correspondence

The Review Correspondence covers 1956–88, a period during which the literary editors of the New Statesman included such distinguished critics as David Caute, Claire Tomalin and Martin Amis. Their correspondents amount to an impressive body of writers, and the Archive contains exchanges with, among many others, W H Auden, Terry Eagleton, Ted Hughes, Doris Lessing, Ian McEwan, Iris Murdoch, Salman Rushdie and Stephen Spender. There is also correspondence with writers who have strong links to other Sussex collections: Geoffrey Gorer, Tom Harrisson, Charles Madge and Leonard Woolf.

The letters are principally of interest for the light they shed on the process of commissioning arts features and reviews. However, the exchanges are often conversational and letters on one topic may make tangential reference to another. Some writers mention the fortunes of the New Statesman in passing or illuminate the writing process itself.
