Autumn teaching

Building on existing levels of proficiency at B1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference [CEFR] the module aims to:

  • Enable students to understand the main ideas within extended speech and texts and to communicate effectively in the target language (TL) in a variety of contexts;
  • Provide opportunities, across a selected variety of topics and themes, for participation in advanced level communicative language activities (e.g. listening, reading, speaking, writing, interaction, and mediation);
  • Consolidate and develop the range of complex elements of language structures, and specialised vocabulary to support further accuracy and control in use of the TL;
  • Facilitate the analysis of aspects of the TL culture through a variety of contextualised activities and materials, in a range of media, e.g. text; audio; audio-visual; digital.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 44 hours of contact time and about 106 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology.
